Rape seed oil powered Generators are an alternative option providing emergency standby power for critical systems although it must be said, that Rape seed oil is better used in generators that are providing prime power ( continuous power ) rather than standby power. Rape seed oil powered generators are basically similar to standard diesel generators; other than they have been adjusted to burn, Rape seed oil fuels. As the end user it is important to only use E.U. standard rape seed oil fuels –EN14214 is the standard for biodiesel fuels and this includes rape seed oil for use as a fuel.
Rape seed oil fuel must be used during each 6 month period as it doesn’t have the shelf life of diesel oil ( known as heavy oil or Red diesel ). We have known diesel generators that had fuel in their tanks untouched for 10 years, start up without difficulty. The same cannot be said for Bio Diesel fuels as they are derived for vegetable matter rather than fuel oil.
We would also advise that the Bio Diesel fuel tank contains an agitation system to avoid stagnation of the Bio fuel. For example, in Germany, Biodiesel is made from oil seed rape to the European Standard EN14214. Some manufacturers insist on "RME", rapeseed methyl esters, and won't cover the use of soya biodiesel, because soya biodiesel fails the EN14214 standard and PowerContinuity Systems does not advise using Soya derived oil in any of its generators.
Rape Seed oil Generators – tend to be usually between 250 kVA to 600 kVA.
Rape Seed Oil Open set – No sound proofing - These are usually installed inside a dedicated room in a basement or ground floor level next to the switch intake. The Bio Diesel generator , alternator and fuel tank are all mounted on a heavy duty metal skid. As there is no sound attenuation the noise levels are high.
Rape Seed Oil Silent Canopied set – With sound proofing by means of the acoustic canopy - These are usually installed outside a building in a car park or outside the intake room and 80dbA @ 1 metres noise level. This most commonly used generators termed ‘silent’ are 80 dbA @ 1 metre noise level in open field conditions.
Rape Seed Oil Silent Acoustic and weather proof canopy – With sound proofing by means of the acoustic canopy that is both lockable and weather proof - These are usually the most commonly used generators termed ‘silent’ are 80 dbA @ 1 metre noise level in open field conditions
Rape Seed Oil Purpose Built Bespoke Silent generators– We can custom build in accordance with the clients noise level requirements whether it is a residential site or sensitive office environment :-
Silent Specification to have 75dbA or less noise emissions @ 1 metre in open field conditions Super Silent Specification to have 70dbA or less noise emissions @ 1 metre in open field conditions
Extreme Silent Specification to have 65dbA or less noise emissions @ 1 metre in open field conditions
Whisper Silent Specification to have 60dbA or less noise emissions @ 1 metre in open field conditions

Rape Seed Oil Fuel Tanks
Fuel tanks for Bio Diesel Generators– Each generator that we build comes with an on-board fuel tank. If you choose an openset generator on a skid then the fuel tank is usually a separate stand alone tank unless you tell us otherwise when ordering. For any tank we advise an agitation system.
Never chop and change or use sub standard fuels as this will damage both the generator and shorten its working life. If your generator has been designed to run on Rape Seed Oil Fuel then contact PowerContinuity before attempting to run the generator on any other fuel.
We can custom build larger fuels tanks in accordance with the clients requirements up to 14 days fuel requirements. The largest that we have built so far is 20,000 litres Bio Diesel storage tank.
When ordering a Bio Diesel Generator for use outside of the UK you’ll need to take into account the climatic conditions of the final site i.e. will it be humid and high temperature?
