What's Happening to the power ?
Power Outage Cutting Power Supplies in London - Major disruption
Commuters had to evacuate trains and stations; some were caught underground when the power failed.
The remaining transport available was swamped and brought to a virtual standstill. London was gripped with a power loss with over 60% of the underground being affected and effectively non operational.
The power failure not only affected the rail network but also homes and businesses were left without power throughout Battersea, Brixton and London Bridge areas of London. Power that had been thought to be uninterruptible had failed at the peak of the rush hour.
Businesses and buildings without standby generators found that people had been trapping in lifts.
Over four hundred calls were made to the Fire Brigade to assist trapped people due to the power failure.
The power outage occurred on the rail network somewhere between London and Ashford, Kent.
Connex had not expected that such a single power outage could actually take down almost all their network as well as large areas of London .
The train company Connex said "Our engineer are working flat out to find the fault and restore power."
However, some, including St Thomas Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital, were able to rely on back-up power generators .
Businesses and Hospitals that already had emergency standby generators and power protection systems suffered no disruption.
