What's Happening to the power ?
Power Failure - Takes Out Mobile Phone Network Operator
Carphone warehouse loss access to its huge warehouse and distribution hub in Acton. West Midlands when a power surge caused major loss of total power shutting down the operation.
This was a double whammy for the Carphone Warehouse.
First, the company suffered the major loss of power during this extremely busy Christmas sales period, but then the fault activated the fire alarm causing all the 2,000 staff to evacuate the building.
Staffs were unable to return to work until the afternoon.
The financial loss for the Carphone Warehouse for such a large number of staff to be 'unproductive' and the loss of distribution to the store network couldn't yet be calculated, but was said to be substantial.
Power failure problems affect many unprepared companies.
A few months previously, Carphone Warehouse had to deal with a system failure concerning its chip and pin facilities. Customers were unable to make payments with cards.
Comment - On reflection Businesses may feel it's wise to seek to minimise the impact of such disasters with the implementation of power protection systems including standby generators and power surge protection. There are no guarantees of uninterruptible power from the national grid. It is wise to accept this and make your own provision for an alternative power supply to allow your business to operate, undisrupted.
