Powering the Peak: Bespoke Engineering at 3,560 Feet

MOUNT SNOWDON, WALES – Power Continuity Systems has successfully designed, built, and commissioned a bespoke, state-of-the-art generator control system for the two summit generators at Mount Snowdon. Operating at the highest altitude of any generator installation in the United Kingdom, these two units provide the only electrical power available at the summit visitor center and facilities.

First inaugurated in 1896, the Snowdon Mountain Railway and summit site have stood as a historic icon of British engineering and tourism for over a century. Building on this legacy, Power Continuity was contracted to completely redesign the control architecture from scratch, introducing advanced remote control, automated synchronisation, and real-time telemetry capabilities to ensure uninterrupted power in extreme weather conditions.

Key Project Highlights

  • Highest Operational Generators in the UK: Perched atop Mount Snowdon at 3,560 feet (1,085 metres) above sea level, the North and South generators operate under some of the most challenging climate conditions in the country.
  • Sole Power Source at the Summit: Because grid connection is absent at the peak, these two generators—originally installed by Power Continuity in 2022—supply 100% of the summit’s electrical energy needs.
  • In-House Bespoke Engineering: Every control panel was custom-engineered, wired, and tested in-house by Power Continuity engineers prior to transport and summit integration.
  • Dual Remote Control Capabilities: Facilities staff at the base station of Mount Snowdon can now fully operate and control both the North and South generators remotely.
  • Head Office Real-Time Monitoring: Power Continuity engineers can remotely monitor, diagnose, and adjust operating parameters for both generators directly from Power Continuity headquarters in real time.

Engineered for Extreme Reliability

Operating equipment at high altitude presents severe environmental challenges, including sub-zero temperatures, dense moisture, and extreme wind forces. The newly installed 2026 control systems feature industrial-grade telemetry and automated fail-over mechanisms to maintain power continuousness without requiring on-site manual intervention during harsh winter conditions.
